Additional learning support
At Coniston Public School, we recognise that students have different strengths, abilities and learning needs. We work to support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can access learning and participate in school life.
We get to know students as individuals and work with families, teachers and support staff to understand their learning needs and identify ways to support them. A formal diagnosis is not always required for a student to receive additional support.
Support that fits your child's needs
Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to develop support plans and adjustments that suit each child's needs.
How do we know when a student needs help?
We identify learning needs by:
- teachers noticing changes in learning progress, behaviour or wellbeing
- reviewing assessment results and student progress
- assessing specific learning measures, if required
- listening to concerns raised by parents and carers.
What can additional support look like?
Additional learning support can include:
- teachers and support staff working with students and families
- specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- tailored programs to extend high potential and gifted students and support their advanced learning needs
- small-group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support
- regular check-ins to review and update planned supports.
What does this look like in the classroom?
Classroom adjustments may include:
- accessible learning spaces
- assistive technology and instructional resources
- opportunities to use hands-on resources
- extra guidance, simplified content or a different focus during lessons.
Assessment adjustments may include:
-
additional time
-
simplified language
-
adjusted learning content
-
breaks during tasks
-
different ways to demonstrate learning (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed. If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.
